Cardinal Jean Marie Rodrigue Villeneu

  1. The cardinal’s last name is Villeneuve (Newton is the English equivalent of his name). He was Archbishop of Quebec from 11 Dec 1931 to his death on 17 Jan 1947. He was elevated to cardinal on 13 Mar 1933. This group photo was taken outside the co-cathedral on the occasion of his return visit, in 1936, to his earlier diocese of Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan (Canada) that he was assigned to on 16 Jun 1930 for a brief period prior to his promotion to Quebec City. His successor, Bishop Louis Joseph Arthur Melanson is shown to the left of the cardinal, wearing choir dress with a then-worn manteletta; he was appointed on 25 Nov 1932 and served as bishop until 16 Dec 1936 when he was made Archbishop of Moncton where he served until his death on 25 Nov 1932.

Again you can thank David Cheney for this information (except for the date of the visit, which I already had from an earlier published version of this photo). His near-encyclopedic website can be accessed at http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/ for any additional information.

  2. Correction: the date of Archbishop Melanson’s death was 23 Oct 1941, not, obviously, the date of his Gravelbourg appointment. Sorry I missed that.

Incidently, the Gravelbourg diocese was suppressed on 14 September 1998 and was folded into the Suffragan Diocese of Saskatoon of the Archdiocese of Regina. It is now a titular diocese only. Again David Cheney’s website can be consulted for further information and deserves our thanks for making it all available.
